What is a Ductless Mini-Split?

A ductless mini-split is an HVAC system that controls the temperature in your home by transferring heat between the inside and outside air. When cooling, the system takes the air inside your home, cools it using refrigerant, and transfers the heat energy outside. While in heating mode, the system works in reverse to pull heat from the outside air and transfers it inside. A ductless mini-split unit consists of one or more interior units mounted on the walls and a condenser/compressor unit outside.

While conventional HVAC systems run off a single unit that cools or warms the air in the entire home via ducts, ductless mini-split systems can provide each area with their own climate controls. Air handlers can be installed in one room or throughout the entire house.

The fact that the system doesn’t rely on ducts makes it a more efficient HVAC solution for your home. Air ducts are estimated to leak as much as 20% or more of conditioned air, raising your energy bills because of the energy wasted. This can increase the wear and tear on the system since it must run longer cycles to reach the set temperature. Ductless units tend to last longer than a traditional HVAC system. With a mini-split system each air handler comes with its own thermostat, so you can set the temperature higher or lower in one room without changing the temperature of the entire house.

Is a Ductless Mini-Split Right for My Murphysboro Home?

While there are several benefits to installing a ductless mini-split system, there are specific households that can benefit from it more than others. Here are some signs that your home can greatly benefit from installing a ductless mini-split system:

You Live in an Older Home

If you live in a home that is older than most, its ductwork might be outdated or insufficient for your needs – or it may have no ductwork at all. A ductless mini-split can give you the climate control your home needs without installing ductwork, which can be an expensive and intrusive process.

The Temperature Throughout Your Home Is Inconsistent

Some floorplans make it difficult for your HVAC system to reach the entire home. Your son might complain that his bedroom is too cold, but you don’t want him adjusting the thermostat to make the whole house hot. A ductless mini split can provide him with his own temperature controls so he can be comfortable in his room while you’re in the living room. When your son moves out, you can turn off the mini split so you aren’t heating or cooling an unoccupied room, which can also save you on your energy bills.

You Have Additions or Rooms Not Connected to Your HVAC System

The reality is that homes come in all shapes and sizes, and a conventional HVAC system might not be best for all of them. For example, if you have a room directly over your garage, you know how often that room can get chilly during the cold winter months. With a ductless mini-split, you can eliminate that issue and keep that room nice and warm all winter long. Mini-splits are also practical when turning an area such as a garage, sunroom, attic, or a separate dwelling like a bunkhouse or a workshop.
